Self-Care: The Importance of Taking Care of Yourself!
Due to the nature of our busy lives, taking a break to care for oneself may sometimes seem like a luxury.
We often believe that pushing ourselves to exhaustion will lead to greater rewards. But is that really the case?
Without self-care, it will be difficult to function at your best. To avoid burnout and prevent stress from taking over, you need to take time to rest and care for yourself.
💛💚. Group of Family Caregivers, “non-professionals” exploring their artistic skills, with Professor Miguel Alberto Cantillo
This message from the Unsung Heroines Foundation highlights a crucial point about self-care. In our fast-paced lives, it’s easy to overlook our own needs, but prioritizing self-care is essential for our overall well-being and effectiveness. By taking breaks and engaging in activities that nurture our creativity—like the artistic exploration mentioned with Professor Miguel Alberto Cantillo—family caregivers can recharge and avoid burnout. It’s a reminder that self-care is not a luxury, but a necessity for sustaining our energy and passion in caring for others

LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP. September 2023
Día de Amor y Amistad (Day of Love and Friendship) in Colombia is celebrated every year on the third Saturday of September. It is a traditional celebration in which friends, acquaintances, boyfriends, husbands and wives express their love and affection for each other. Some of the main traditions for this day in Colombia are playing the “secret friend” game, which consists of distributing the names of each of the participants until the day of the celebration. Then you give a surprise gift to your secret friend who was assigned to you. These gifts are often flowers or chocolates.
During the celebration the giver describes their secret friend until the other player discovers who it is. It may seem a small thing, but our experience shows us that it can have a great impact on their well-being, especially growing in confidence after having to speak in public.
LETTER FROM HEROINAS EN LA SOMBRA -UNSUNG HEROINES- FOUNDATION
A VISITOR FROM ENGLAND. September 2023
We had the pleasure to meet Mrs. Dilia White-Andrade from England recently. She is one of the members of The Caregivers Support Trust. They are our main supporter in England, along with the Women’s Fellowships of Exmouth Baptist Church and the Budleigh Salterton Baptist Church congregation.
We went to Pizza Loca, a local pizza shop, a real treat for some ladies. This is a precious and valued time for them, where they have the opportunity to take a break from their daily task as a caregiver, enjoying some time by themselves, and sharing experiences in a relaxed and safe environment
Sometimes not being able to take time away from caring, the ladies find it hard to take a break from their role, either because they do not have anyone else to take over, or because they feel guilty or worried about leaving the person they care for. Unpaid carers may miss out on opportunities for leisure, recreation, socialising, or personal development. They may also lose contact with friends,
family, or community networks. This can affect their sense of identity and belonging.
